A local tugboat operator says he saw a large chunk of metal fall from the Memorial Bridge. Bob Hassold said he had just left the dock when the metal fell into the water just in front of his boat’s bow. He estimated the chunk was four or five feet in diameter, and expressed concern that if it had hit the boat, it could have killed one of his passengers. Officials from Portsmouth and the State Department of Transportation have been notified and are investigating. The incident occurred as New Hampshire and Maine are working on proposals to repair or replace both bridges between Portsmouth and Kittery.
