York Police Station Construction to be put on Hold

York Town Manager Rob Yandow has called for work on the new Police station to stop for the time being until several issues surrounding the project have been worked out. One issue is offer the stockpiling of discarded tree stumps on the property, restoring a vernal pool and other environmental issues. The Municipal Building Committee also is having to deal with the issue of land ownership. The city thought they owned the land but it appears that land is actually owned by Harry, Dewey and Sam Horn. The city has discussed the possibility of a land swap or actually buying the land outright, but that idea didn’t sit well with committee members for fear that the purchase would push the project over budget, something they promised voters they would not do. On top of all of that, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers want answers soon to questions about work already done on the site.
