A three year old girl from Somersworth was treated for injuries she suffered yesterday morning when a tombstone toppled onto her and pinned her legs. The unidentified girl was in the Forest Glade Cemetery with a day care group, and was playing hide-and-seek with several of the other children.
It took two police officers and a firefighter to lift the stone, and the girl was transported to Wentworth Douglas Hospital and underwent surgery for a fractured leg. Somersworth Fire Chief Dean Crombie said the girl was fortunate the heavy stone didn’t fall on her upper body.
Somersworth Police Captain Russell Timmons said the weight of two children hiding behind the grave marker apparently dislodged the stone as the girl approached. Police are ruling it an accident and don’t expect to file charges.
