Berwick Planners Approve Senior Housing Project

On Wednesday night, the Berwick Planning Board voted to approve the application submitted by Avesta Housing of Portland to build a 28-unit senior housing apartment building on Young Street. The approval was conditional and all relevant town departments must sign off on the project before a purchase and sale agreement can be signed. Avesta will pay $286,000 for the land next to the new public library and near Central School, where those housing units will be built. Avesta says their next step is to apply for federal tax credits from the Maine State Housing Authority so that they can receive equity contributions, as well as loans from Maine State Housing, that will enable them to construct the building.
