Public Hearing Scheduled on Downtown Portsmouth Parking Rates

Reporter: Dave Andreesen
Date: September 17, 2012

Downtown parking was on the agenda again at Monday night’s Portsmouth City Council meeting. The Council voted unanimously to schedule a public hearing on a proposed ordinance that would raise the hourly rate for high demand parking spaces in the Market Square area to $1.50, while keeping others downtown at $1.00 an hour. Several councilors, including Jack Thorsen, Bob Lister, Esther Kennedy and Ken Smith, said they were not in favor of the increases but wanted to get the public’s input before making a final decision.

The public will have an opportunity to speak on this change at its next meeting on October 1st. The Council also voted in favor of a 2.2 million dollar bond to fund improvements to city bridges, street, and sidewalk in 2013.
