A Strafford County Superior Court judge has given the state and groups challenging New Hampshire's new voter registration law until Friday to work out a compromise. The state chapters of the League of Women Voters and the American Civil Liberties Union are trying to block the law, which they claim would block out-of-state students from voting in New Hampshire. The law requires people registering to vote to sign a statement saying they declare New Hampshire their domicile and are subject to laws that apply to all residents, including auto registration and licensing laws. At hearing Wednesday, Judge John Lewis told lawyers the law is creating confusion and could disenfranchise students but he is reluctant to override the Legislature.
