Following a recommendation by the Public Safety Strategies Group, the Portsmouth Police department will look at hiring a civilian to manage the departments budget. Back in November of 2011, the PSSG described the Portsmouth Police Department as being weighted down with too many managers. According to the job posting, the civilian hire will be responsible for managing police accounting and bookkeeping, managing state and federal grants, and assisting with budget development and maintenance. That position will be paid in the range of $54,000 to $65,000 per year, based on experience. The PSSG report followed a six-month study of police operations at a cost of $50,000 from the 2010 police budget.
