Eliot Board Wants EPA to Look at Shiller Station

The Eliot Board of Selectmen moved on Thursday night to craft a letter to the EPA, asking for the agency to look at the pollution concerns coming from the Portsmouth Shiller Power Station. The board wants that agency to assess whether sulfur dioxide emissions should be curbed at the Schiller plant, after claims that emissions from the plant are to blame for breathing ailments such as asthma and emphysema. Catherine Corkery, field organizer for the New Hampshire Sierra Club told the board that in her opinion, the petition letter would be the prudent thing to do. Selectmen must now approve the final version of that letter prior to it being sent out to the EPA.
