A new Pay to play program could be coming to the Spaulding High School Hockey team. On Thursday evening, The Finance Committee voted to pass that plan onto the Rochester School Board. Playing hockey can cost around $1,000 per season, per player, and the plan includes fundraising options for players to work off that total. The reason for the plan is that the current school budget only allows for $15,000 for the program and the Spaulding High athletic department says ice time alone costs them around $33,000. Other area schools have already implemented similar plans. Kingswood High School in Wolfeboro charges $700 per player for their ice hockey times, while in Somersworth, the school district charges each student $1,150 in fundraising, with a $1,500 “buy out”. Rochester School Board will take up that matter at their next meeting on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in City Hall.
