A properly working sprinkler system helped to knock down a fire that broke out at Durham Marketplace in Durham just before midnight on Sunday. Durham Fire Chief Corey Landry said that it appeared that the fire started in one of the store’s display coolers. Durham Fire responded to the alarm at around quarter after 11:00 p.m. and crews from surrounding communities responded, although by the time they got there the fire was all but put out and the building was filled with smoke. Fire fighters ventilated that building and the scene was deemed under control by around 11:30. The extent of the damage has not yet been assessed.
