Somersworth Mayor Being Treated for Signs of Meningitis
Reporter: Dave Andreesen Date: October 17, 2012
Somersworth Mayor Matt Spencer told WTSN that he was recently hospitalized and has been receiving treatments for a possible case of fungal meningitis. Spencer was being treated for a back injury at Pain Care LLC in Somersworth where he received a steroid injection in his back that may have been tainted with the fungus.
Spencer said although his case isn’t confirmed, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has been in contact with him and continues to monitor his condition. He said he’s still awaiting results to confirm it is meningitis, but with the symptoms he has the doctors felt it was a good precaution to start treatment immediately.
After a seven day stay in the hospital, Spencer is now recovering at home and said he doesn’t plan to take a leave from his duties as Mayor. He urged other patients who received the same treatment and medicine at the center to go get tested immediately, as the fungal meningitis could lay dormant for up to two months.
