Neither New Hampshire nor Maine succeeded in the competition for federal “Race to the Top” education grants. New Hampshire had applied for 75 million dollars over four years, while Maine was hoping for a similar amount. A total of 3.4 billion dollars in grants is up for grabs from the US Department of Education. 35 states and the District of Columbia had applied for the funds in the second round, where finalists were announced yesterday. “Race to the Top”is part of President Obama’s economic stimulus program, and aims at boosting student achievement and school reform.
